Indian telecoms not excited about iPhone 5

Cupertino, Calif.-based technology giant Apple Inc. recently took wraps off the iPhone 5, creating a great buzz all over the world; but Indian telecom operators are not excited about the newest iPhone at all.
While sales of the iPhones account for a considerable portion of US service operators’ revenues, Indian telecom operators do not the iPhone as a great opportunity.
Indian operators are of the opinion that selling the iPhone is not a good business sense for them because the 

Cupertino firm’s business proposition for Indian operators are very competitive.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, an official from a top Indian operator said, “We don’t like their business proposition. They want us to sell a huge number (of the iPhone), which doesn’t make commercial sense.”

Moreover, Indian smartphone market is very price sensitive and thus selling very costly phones is not viable enough.

Even if the iPhone 5 is launched in India, its heavy price will be a major obstacle for consumers. The iPhone 5 is expected to cost in the range of between Rs. 45,000 and Rs. 50,000.
The iPhone 5, which features a bigger (4-inch) display and a slimmer profile than the iPhone 4S, will be available in the United States, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan and Australia starting Sept.21st.

Apple launching 2 iPhones?


Apple may be launching a new edition of theiPhone 4S and doing away with the iPhone 3GSwhen it launches the next generation iPhone. According to a news report in The Telegraph, quoting sources close to retailers, the Cupertino-based tech giant will add an 8GB version of the current flagship, iPhone 4S, to its line-up.
The news story adds that the purported iPhone 5, which is expected to be unveiled on September 12, will come in three storage capacities. If this is true, it is likely that Applewill stick to the 16, 32 and 64GB formula for the new phone as well. Along with that, the sources also said that the sixth-generation iPhone will hit the shelves on September 21, in line with rumours.

If the company discontinues the Apple iPhone 3GS in India as well, it will peg the price of the base variant of the iconic device at Rs 37,000, a far cry from the Rs 10,000 price tag of the 3GS version. This will further alienate the manufacturer from the country's buyers; the company is not among the top 10 mobile phone makers of India. It is expected that the iPhone 4S 8GB, if launched, will cost approximately Rs 40,000.

China‘s biggest search engine Baidu enters mobile browser fight


China's dominant search engine Baidu Inc rolled out a mobile browser on Monday to help secure its share in a mobile Internet market that surpasses the US population in size and to fend off smaller rivals such as Qihoo 360 Technology Co.

In China, the number of users who access the Internet from mobile phones has risen to 388 million, according to a government report in July, outstripping the number of users who access it from a desktop computer for the first time.

The Baidu Mobile Browser, which will compete with UCWeb Inc's UC Browser, Google Inc's Chrome and default Android browser, and Apple Inc's Safari, is about 20 per cent faster than its rivals based on internal tests, Li Mingyuan, Baidu's general manager of mobile and cloud computing, told reporters on Friday at a pre-launch briefing.

Baidu's mobile browser also allows users to access a plethora of web-based mobile applications (apps) and run high-definition video through the browser without having to download apps or supporting software.

The browser, together with Baidu's other mobile products such as its mobile operating system and cheap smartphones launched with partners, forms the core of what Baidu hopes will eventually become a source of revenue.

"Monetizing mobile is hugely important for Baidu," said Michael Clendenin, managing director of RedTech Advisors, who added that the drive to monetize would be a medium-term concern for Baidu as its advertising clients still need to create mobile-friendly websites.

The shift to mobile could pose problems for Baidu if it can't find a way to make money from search traffic. Baidu currently makes the bulk of its revenue from users searching from laptops and desktops.

Baidu's goal is for 80 per cent of China's Android handsets to have downloaded the Baidu Mobile Browser by the end of 2012, Li said.

The Baidu Mobile Browser also comes as Baidu is fending off threats on its home turf. Anti-virus software firm Qihoo 360 Technology's entry last month into search caused Baidu's shares to tumble 17 per cent to date.

Baidu is also moving into cloud computing, a term used to describe data storage or processing on the Web.

Chief Financial Officer Jennifer Li said on Monday the firm will invest more than 10 billion yuan ($1.6 billion) to set up its cloud computing centre. 

Android app to test water quality


When environmental engineer John Feighery got an internship at NASA in the 1990s, he wanted to be an astronaut but he was given a job working with a team designing the US bathroom for the space station.
The small, closet-like space needed a toilet and room for hand washing, bathing and a place to keep toiletries. Feighery also worked on a project to fix equipment designed for monitoring crew health, which included testing water and air quality.
After the Columbia Space Shuttle accident in 2003 left seven crew members dead, the Space Shuttle programme was suspended and further work on the International Space Station was delayed.
Feighery turned his focus from managing water, sanitation and health problems in space to those on Earth.
"I'd been working on supplying clean water to three or four people in space, and meanwhile there are a billion here on earth that don't have it," Feighery said in an interview with AlertNet, the global humanitarian news service. "The world that my kids are going to grow up in has this huge problem that I felt like I could work on."
Work on the ground 
After he left the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration Feighery tested well water in Bangladesh for a job funded by the National Institutes of Health, part of the US Health and Human Services department.

He felt the work, which involved using heavy equipment, charting notes and locations by hand and transporting samples in incubators to a distant laboratory could be simpler and less expensive.
That's how he came up with the idea to use inexpensive testing equipment available online, and mWater - an Android app that records the data results of water quality tests and maps them.
The application allows people to track water quality tests at any given water source over time, providing instant results which are put in context with other tests.
The app, which is available in the Google Play Store, also allows users to leave notes for other users about the appearance of the water, its scent, and how the water is flowing from the source, building up an archive of information over time.
A photograph of the water source can be uploaded and location details are registered automatically using a GPS reading from the mobile device.
UN Habitat funded a study in Tanzania to test mWater's capacity to provide local health officers with a simple way to see the quality of water using a mobile phone with an Android operating system.
"It's a very novel approach to water quality monitoring," said Lars Onsager Stordal, who works for UN Habitat's water, sanitation and infrastructure department. "It makes it possible, affordable and manageable at the local level."
Health workers can use the data or even go with a sick patient and easily test the water where they live.
"Anybody can look at it and see what's going on to see if anyone else might get infected," Feighery said. "When fecal contamination occurs somewhere it is the first precursor of disease in water systems. Before cholera spreads there's usually some failure in the sanitation system."
Giving poor people proper access to safe water and sanitation would save 2.5 million people a year from dying from diarrhoea and other diseases spread by a lack of hygiene, according to the charity WaterAid.
Next, Feighery will be working with UN Habitat and Rwanda's ministry of health to help equip health workers to use mWater.


Nokia Lumia 920 to feature wireless charging, 8MP camera



Nokia's upcoming Windows Phone handset will include wireless charging, a report has revealed.
According to a report by technology blog The Verge, the Nokia Lumia 920 will support wireless charging, and will have a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 32GB of storage.
The new smartphone, which will be announced at a special event hosted by Nokia and Microsoft in New York on Wednesday, is also rumoured to have and an 8-megapixel camera, the Telegraph reports.
Nokia and Microsoft are also expected to unveil a second handset, the smaller Lumia 820, at the event.
The Lumia 820 is said to have a 4.3-inch display, compared with the 920's 4.5-inch display.

Lifeproof nüüd case waterproofs your iPad without covering the screen


One of the appeals of tablet computers is that they’re “good to go” – you can just grab them and use them wherever you want. The fact that they’re not particularly real-world-proof, however, takes away from that a little. The same thing could be said about smartphones, which is why so many people now keep their phones in rugged, waterproof cases. Well, Lifeproof’s just-launched nüüd case is like one of those smartphone cases, but for the iPad. It’s not the only such product to ever exist, but it is able to do the job without anything covering the tablet’s screen.

The nüüd has an IP-68 protection rating, meaning that it will remain waterproof at a depth of two meters (6.6 feet) for 30 minutes, can withstand drops from up to four feet (1.2 meters), and also keeps out the dust and dirt. It is able to maintain this level of protection, interestingly enough, while leaving the iPad’s screen totally exposed to the elements – the front edges of the case seal against the glass of the screen.

While this does leave the screen open to possible scratches or impacts, it does allow for complete touchscreen functionality, and doesn’t compromise the image quality at all. On other iPad cases, the gap between the tablet’s screen and the clear membrane that covers it makes full touchscreen operation more difficult – or at least, that’s what Lifeproof maintains. The company also states that because those membranes aren’t completely optically perfect, they diminish the display somewhat.
Sealed ports on the case provide access to all of the iPad’s buttons and ports, while a clear glass lens cover its camera. A proprietary Sound Enhancement System channels the tablet’s audio output through the front of the case, which is claimed to result in better sound quality than that of other cases.
According to the rep we spoke to at IFA, the Lifeproof nüüd works with second- and third-generation iPads, and comes bundled with a cover and stand for €127.53 (about US$160). A version of the case designed for the iPhone 4/4S is also available.

Tokyo court finds no Samsung infringement on Apple patent in latest in global battle


TOKYO — A Japanese court on Friday dismissed Apple’s patent infringement claim against Samsung, a significant legal bounceback for the South Korean tech giant as the rivals wage a global battle over intellectual property.
A Tokyo district court ruled in a preliminary session that Samsung didn’t violate patents with its technology for synchronizing music and video between computers and smartphones or tablets. The ruling, the latest in a series of lawsuits and counter-lawsuits spanning at least nine countries and four continents, comes one week after a U.S. court dealt Samsung a costly defeat that could lead to an injunction against some of its devices.

Samsung shares rose after the Friday verdict, helping the company recover from sharp losses earlier in the week.
The Tokyo court addressed a suit filed by the iPhone maker one year ago that said two Samsung smartphones, the Galaxy S and the Galaxy S2, as well as the Galaxy Tab tablet, infringed on patented technology.
“We welcome the court’s decision, which confirmed our long-held position that our products do not infringe Apple’s intellectual property,” Samsung said in a statement.
Together, Samsung and Apple account for roughly half of the lucrative global smartphone market, with Samsung holding 32.6 percent of it, up from 17 percent a year ago, according to the International Data Group. Apple’s share is at 16.9 percent, down from 18.8 percent one year ago.
Samsung doesn’t release sales figures for Japan, according to Bloomberg. But the company is a smaller player, fighting not only with Apple but also domestic companies such as Sharp, Fujitsu and Sony.
The unfolding legal battles, industry analysts say, will determine whether Samsung can stick with the copy-and-improve mindset that turned it into Apple’s main competitor. The Korean conglomerate has long been known as a nimble manufacturer that finds the best existing technology, imitates it and sometimes even improves it, all while driving down costs.
Samsung sustained its biggest blow last week when a Silicon Valley court awarded Apple damages of more than $1 billion and said that Samsung had infringed on some of Apple’s key smartphone and tablet design features, including the intuitive “pinch-to-zoom” feature. A judge later this year will decide whether eight Samsung products should be pulled from the U.S. market.
Some South Korean media, following the U.S. decision, suggested that Apple had benefited from home-turf favoritism. A Seoul-based court last week offered a ruling of its own, determining that the two tech makers had infringed on one another’s various patents. The patent-infringing products from both companies were banned in South Korea.

Smartphone app determines location, speed and direction of distant objects

Researchers at the University of Missouri have developed a prototype app that combines a smartphone’s GPS, compass and imaging capabilities to calculate the exact location of distant objects and track their speed and direction. The researchers say the PositionIt app could allow a single off-the-shelf device to replace various pieces of equipment carried by soldiers on the battlefield, or be used closer to home to judge the distance to the green when playing golf.

“The great advantage of a smartphone is that it provides so many tools in a single, readily available, relatively inexpensive package,” said Qia Wang, a doctoral student in MU’s College of Engineering who led the research team. By combining these onboard capabilities, the software Wang and his team have developed can calculate the exact location of distant objects, both when the size of the object is known and when it isn’t.

When the size of the target is known, the software can determine the distance to the target by using a single image captured on the smartphone’s camera and comparing its relative size in the image to the target’s known actual size. The software then combines this distance information with the smartphone’s GPS location and compass reading to calculate the target’s longitude and latitude.
When the size of the target is not known, an additional image needs to be captured so the software can use the two images to triangulate the location of the target. Additionally, the software can also track the direction and calculate the speed of a moving target from a short video captured on the smartphone.
The research team has developed a prototype version of the targeting and tracking software, which is currently undergoing testing. They hope this will provide data that will enable them to improve the speed and accuracy of the software. Advances in smartphone hardware are also expected to improve the performance of the software.
“Currently, our software is limited by the physical abilities of smartphone hardware, but the devices are improving rapidly,” Wang said. “We anticipate that improvements in GPS accuracy, battery life and camera resolution will allow our software to make even more accurate observations. We also are making our software more user-friendly.”
As well as potentially providing soldiers with the capability to precisely locate targets before calling in an air strike without the need for various instruments, such as a rangefinder, GPS, and compass, the researchers say the PositionIt system could be used by golfers to calculate the distance to the green, or by parents to clock a speeding car near a school while catching the offending vehicle on video.

Intel developing chipsets to allow laptops to wirelessly charge mobile devices


Wireless charging technology is quickly gaining attention from many mobile device manufacturers, and with good reason. Eliminating the need for a charging cable would offer a huge convenience across the board, and some of the products on the market like LG’s WPD-800 and the Powermat have already drawn quite a bit of attention. Now Intel has stepped up to announce plans for a new technology that will not only allow one mobile device to be charged by another with a built-in charger (such as a laptop), but also won't require the two devices even be touching to do so. Along with Integrated Device Technology, Inc. (IDT), Intel hopes to develop a chipset by early 2013 that will charge a smartphone through a laptop that sits a short distance away.

Intel has been tinkering around with the concept of laptop-to-phone wireless charging since 2008, but teaming up with IDT is a big step towards bringing that technology to consumers. Both companies have stressed the importance of reducing the size and cost of wireless charging as much as possible so it can be easily integrated into consumer products. IDT already has some experience in this department, having developed a single-chip wireless transmitter and receiver in the past.
One thing that separates this planned system from most other wireless charging systems out there is the way the energy is transferred between two points. Most wireless chargers available now transmit power through induction (i.e. physical contact between the device and charger), while the planned chipset will transmit power through resonance inductive coupling. It is so named because it involves transmitting electrical energy between two coils that are tuned to resonate at the same frequency.
Because the receiving coil can pick most of the energy even from distance away, the two devices can sit an inch or so apart without breaking the connection. Intel certainly isn't the first company to produce such technology, but it could be among the earliest to incorporate it into a home consumer device. With more development though, it's becoming more and more conceivable that future versions of the technology could allow for power-sharing between almost any electronic device over a much wider distance.
Intel has stated that it will begin referencing IDT's chipset in product designs as soon as it is completed in early 2013. The company is also working with other manufacturers on integrating the technology with other devices, like printers, cameras, and smartphone cases. So far, the company has not announced any specific consumer-ready gadgets that will use the new wireless charging technology, but has mentioned that the chipset will be aimed towards Ultrabooks, all-in-one PCs, smartphones, and standalone chargers.

‘Samsung to launch Android-powered camera during IFA‘

Samsung is likely to launch an Android-powered smart-camera during the IFA in Berlin, Germany, according to an online report. The purported point-and-shoot Samsung Galaxy S Camera will have a 4.8-inch touchscreen, just like the Samsung Galaxy S III, and a 16MP sensor, whose size is not known as of now, says the report on GSMArena. 


According to the website, the camera is said to be twice as thick as the Galaxy S III and will run on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). Reported to be launched in Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi+3G variants, the device will feature 10x zoom and pop-out Xenon flash. The connectivity options reported to be for data only and the device will not support calls. 

The manufacturer is showing the smart-camera to various carriers. There is no indication of the pricing and availability of the model till now. 

Previously, Samsung has broken cover of several unique products at the IFA, such as its first-ever tablet Galaxy Tab, its very-first Amoled tablet Galaxy Tab 7.7 and its popular phablet Samsung Note. 

Japanese electronics major Nikon recently launched an Android-powered camera in the market called Coolpix S800c.  

Google launches new initiative for mobile Internet users

Internet giant Google today launched a new initiative to help businesses reach out to over 70 million mobile Internet users in the country. 

Under the 'Let's talk Mo' initiative', Google will help businesses create mobile sites for free, Google said in its official blogpost. 

According to Nielsen Informate Insights for smartphone users 2012 study, Indian smartphone users are spending over 157 minutes daily on the mobile web (89 per cent of them are searching for information). 

The user-experience is, however, not optimised for the mobile screens as most Indian websites are still designed for the PC experience, it added. 

"That's why starting today, Google is giving Indian businesses two options. One, create a mobile optimised site for free and second test how user friendly is your existing mobile site," Google IndiaCountry Head Marketing Nikhil Rungta said. 

Businesses will be able to see how their sites look on a smartphone using the GoMoMeter tool and get personalised recommendations for creating a more user-friendly experience. 

The site also provides information on current mobile trends, best practices, case studies and various other resources to help businesses develop a successful mobile presence. 

"The dedicated website (http://www.letstalkmo.com/in/d/) will provide all the tools and resources that businesses need to have a presence on the mobile platform," Rungta said. 

With more and more people using their mobile phones to explore the web, it makes sense for businesses to have a website optimised for mobile sooner than later, he added.  

WhatsApp: 10 billion messages exchanged in a day

WhatsApp, the popular messaging app for various smartphones, has achieved a new record with a total ten billion messages sent and received in one day. 


People behind the app disclosed the news this week on Twitter. 

"New daily record: 4B inbound, 6B outbound = 10b total messages a day!"," its creators tweeted.

WhatsApp, which is called 'text message killer' offers different features such as the ability to share photos, videos and audio notes, The Telegraph reports. 

People download the app, scan their address book to see which friends are already signed up and invite others to join WhatsApp via a message sent through the service. 

According to a report by The Next Web, the American company says it is not an " SMS killer". 

Instead it refers to itself as a "drug to get people hooked on data plans". 

Motorola likely to pull out of India

Motorola Mobility may shut down its business in India as part of the massive global restructuring that the company has planned. BGR India, a technology blog, reported the company didn't plan to bring additional stock of its phones and had put up an R&D center in Hyderabad for sale. 

When contacted William Moss, director of communications for Asia-Pacific at Motorola, confirmed the restructuring plan. However, he stopped short of saying the company would no longer do business in India. 

"Motorola Mobility is reducing its headcount by approximately 4,000 globally, and two-thirds of this reduction will occur outside US. We also plan to close or consolidate about one-third of our 90 facilities globally," he told TOI in an email. "India is affected by this global restructuring, but we do continue to have substantial operations there." 

Moss added the restructuring plan is bound to lead to job cuts in the affected countries. "We understand how hard these changes will be for the employees concerned. We are committed to helping them through this difficult transition and will be providing generous severance packages, as well as outplacement services to help people find new jobs," he said. 

Motorola Mobility, which has fallen behind Apple and Samsung in the crucial smartphone market, was bought by Google last year for around $12.5 billion. The deal was completed this year and a restructuring of the company and its operations was expected. As soon as the deal completed in May this year, Google replaced Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha with Dennis Woodside, a Google executive, who played a key role in events leading to the closure of the deal. 

Moss said the company would now focus on fewer phones and simplify its business. "We will simplify our mobile product portfolio -- shifting the emphasis from feature phones to more innovative and profitable devices. We expect this strategy to create new opportunities and help return our mobile devices unit to profitability," he said.
